It’s easy to understand why Jan fell in love with this Homewood house adorned with cedar shake and dotted with begonias, River Birch trees, gravel paths and stone planters. Originally from Memphis, Jan moved to Homewood to be closer to her daughter and family. While she wasn’t looking for a new house, the beautiful boxwoods, classic finishes and light filled space sold her. Despite the 5 bedrooms, 2 living rooms, porch and playroom area, Jan says the house has a “cozy feel.”
As important as the overall aesthetic, however, was the love and attention Geoffrey and Jama put into building the house. “I could tell it was their baby, so to speak. They used high end materials throughout the home and built it as if they were building it for their own family. That is the kind of attention to detail and passion you get from the Ketchams.” She adds that it also made decorating the home easy. “It was not hard to fill the space because it was already beautiful. I just added my own personal touches.”
One of Jan’s favorite details is the built in hutch in the kitchen, which according to her is like having a custom, piece of furniture that not only provides storage but serves to display some of her favorite pieces. It’s also functional and allows her to entertain and provide her guests with a warm and welcoming atmosphere, which is perfect for this gourmet cook.
The location of the house was also a draw. She enjoys being surrounded by friends and lots of children -- including her two grandchildren who are just a few blocks away. Jan admits that she already feels like the Homewood community is her extended family.
Because Homewood is so focused on community, Jan loves the flow from the inside of the home to the outdoor spaces. There is a lovely front porch to sit and watch the neighborhood kids play but also a quiet retreat off the master and living area that overlooks the shady backyard. The gravel courtyard adorned with plantings and twinkling lights provides an added living space.
According to Jan, “When you know the builder, you know they will take care of you. Geoffrey and Jama have always been warm and welcoming. That warmth and enthusiasm for creating a personal and beautiful space are now intertwined in the walls I call home.”
